Song of the Ancient Forest is a limited edition fine art print which has been faithfully reproduced from an acrylic on canvas painting that was completed by artist Monte Dolack in 2026. The 60" x 46" painting was commissioned by The Montana Project and is part of a private collection. 

The Song of the Ancient Forest Limited Edition Fine Art Print was also produced in 2026.  The edition size is 100 fine art prints and 10 artist proofs. The print was produced by Marcy James at Paper and Ink in Missoula Montana.  The digital image is conserved on a pH neutral 100% rag fine art paper. The image size of the print is 19" x 15" and the paper size of the print is 22.5" x 17.75"

"Steadily, quietly, an amazing body of work is emerging from the ancient inland rainforest in the Black Ram section of northwest Montana's Yaak Valley.

Monte's enormous portrait of the diversity-some of the diversity-in this region is a classic example of this beloved artist using his singular ability to paint a narrative and tell a story. Titled Song of the Ancient Forest this painting was made in support of designating a climate refuge-the nation's first-in the northwest corner of the Yaak Valley. A small run of limited edition fine art prints is available for $300 each which will help support the work of The Montana Project-host of this year's Climate Aid event which will take place in Bozeman Montana on October 2, 2026

In this painting, the guitar being played was made from a 315 year old Engleman spruce which was toppled to the earth by a clearcut.  The guitar is summoning many of the animals who knew the tree from which the guitar came back when it was a living part of their forest.  Now the guitar advocates for the protection of their forest. In these burning times, it is a joy to see artists such as Monte Dolack supporting climate initiatives that help slow the rate of climate change with a made-in-Montana solution: protect our old and mature forests.
