Monte Dolack describes the moment of illumination for Northern Lights as follows:
"I was creating a series of mythical landscape and animal paintings. Northern Lights was inspired while I was sitting in one of the grand lodges of Glacier National Park; I noticed a mounted elk head with his antlers converted into candelabra. I imagined these animals in a mystical night forest, alive and interacting with me."
